Literature: Revolutionary Sonnets And Other Poems

Celebrate Anthony Burgess’s collected poems as Carcanet launches a redesigned reissue of Revolutionary Sonnets And Other Poems for the #Burgess100 centenary.

Revolutionary Sonnets And Other Poems captures the full range of Anthony Burgess’s poetry and verse. It is as daring, original and inventive as the name suggests. The work explores themes of violence and love, pretensions and emotion, sex and war and is both sobering, and hysterically funny.

In this evening of readings, hear extracts from the book and take part in a discussion about the poetry of Anthony Burgess – an author and lecturer born 100 years ago whose dazzling take on T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land changed our reading of the poem.

Line-up:
Alison Boyle
Austin Collings
Matthew Frost
Angelica Michelis
Danny Moran
Helen Mort
Ian Pople
Valgerður Þóroddsdóttir

The event will begin with a launch of the new Burgess Foundation exhibition. Cartomancy: Anthony Burgess and the Tarot explores Burgess’s creative relationship with dreams and horoscopes. Burgess owned several decks of Tarot cards, and even created at least two himself: these images are displayed alongside previously unseen material from the Foundation collections.
