Matthew Whittle

You are cordially invited to the launch of Matthew Whittle’s new book Post-War British Literature and the “End of Empire”.

The end of the British Empire had an indelible impact on British culture and society. This book examines literary responses to decolonization by a range of writers, including Anthony Burgess, Graham Greene, and Alan Sillitoe, among others.

Post-War book coverThese works not only view decolonization within its global context – alongside the aftermath of the Second World War, the rise of America, and mass immigration – but often propose a solution to imperial decline through cultural renewal.

The event includes a conversation about the book between Dr Matthew Whittle (University of Leeds) and Prof John McLeod (University of Leeds), as well as a Q&A.

You will also be able to view our ‘Time for a Tiger: Anthony Burgess in Malaya‘ exhibition, looking at Burgess’s experiences of Malaya in the 1950s and marking the 60th anniversary of his debut novel.
