We are delighted to announce the shortlist for the Observer/Anthony Burgess Prize for Arts Journalism. Now in its third year, the £2000 prize is for previously unpublished, imaginative, original, and thought-provoking arts journalism.

The eight shortlisted writers were selected by a distinguished panel of judges chaired by writer and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup and including the novelist Helen Oyeyemi, writer Stuart Kelly and associate editor of the Observer Robert McCrum.

The shortlist is:

Shahidha Bari: ‘The National Theatre’s Medea‘

Paul Basgurboga: ‘Extra Time: Match Of The Day 2’

Rosemary Harris: ‘Ventriloquy of the Body Electric: Adrienne Truscott’

Christopher Hyland: ‘Literature and Evil: Martin Amis’s ‘The Zone Of Interest’

Robert Mason: ‘What Do Artists Do All Day?’

Liam O’Brien: ‘Let’s Get Sickening: RuPaul’s Drag Race’

Zoe Pilger: ‘The Woman Upstairs: Claire Messud’

Matt Trueman: ‘Chiller Chekov: The Cherry Orchard’

We received more entries than ever before, from all over the world. The judges were delighted to read so many pieces of exceptional quality and on such a wide variety of subjects – perhaps even wider than Anthony Burgess himself covered in his fifty-year career in journalism.

The winner of the £2,000 prize will be announced on the evening of Thursday 26th February 2015 at Kings Place, London, in a ceremony hosted by Mariella Frostrup.

Further news updates about the prize can be found at www.anthonyburgess.org, @misterenderby or the International Anthony Burgess Foundation Facebook page.
