Xaverian College and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation are delighted to announce the winners of a new short story competition focussing on dystopian themes and landscapes for students under the age of eighteen.

Haider Nasir from Burnage Media Arts College was awarded the under 16 category prize for his story of escape from totalitarianism Take the Light.

Isabella Strong of Xaverian College won the 16-18 category prize for 21984, the tale of a curious teenager who discovers devastating truths about her family and way of life.

Devised by Guy Perry, teacher of English at Xaverian College, and Andrew Biswell, Director of the Burgess Foundation, entries of a very high standard were received from students at Xaverian College and other high schools and colleges around the North West.

Clare Preston-Pollitt, Events and Marketing Officer at the Burgess Foundation said that ‘Burgess’s writing, especially in A Clockwork Orange, is very concerned with dystopian themes which are still relevant today. It’s great to see students submitting such creative work, and next year we hope to receive even more submissions and to be able to reward the students at a prize-giving ceremony in the Burgess Foundation’s Engine House.’
