Venue hire

Thank you for your interest in hiring our venue space. We have received your form and will be in touch in due course. Want the form again? Click here to reset this page.

Hire the Burgess Foundation for your event

The International Anthony Burgess Foundation is a unique venue, situated in one of Manchester’s oldest surviving industrial mill buildings.

Updated and restored in 2019, the building retains many of its original architectural features — including brick-vaulted ceilings from the 1810s. The main event space contains items of furniture and musical instruments owned by Anthony Burgess himself, creating a distinctive location for your event.

Along with the old, we also have the new: you will find modern audio-visual facilities to bring your event to life. The room can seat up to 110 people, depending on the configuration of stage and audience. To request a hire, scroll down this page and fill in our quick request form.

We also offer the fully-licensed Burgess Bar — which provides a relaxed location for your audience or guests before they move into the main venue. Alcoholic drinks, light refreshments and catering can be provided on request. We can service drinks receptions, teas, coffee and soft drinks. Our catering partners can provide canapés, sandwiches, cakes and snacks to suit all budgets and dietary requirements.

The Engine House is ideal for concerts, readings, conferences, book launches, theatre productions, workshops, away-days, lectures, film screenings, discussions and in-conversation events as well as receptions, lunches and private parties.

The cost of hire includes an experienced and friendly team who will ensure that your event runs smoothly. Details of our technical facilities can be found below.

Tell us about your event requirements: Scroll down this page and fill in our quick request form.

If you would like to talk about your event, please contact Ian Carrington on events@anthonyburgess.org or call 0161 235 0776.

We have hosted public events with the Manchester International Festival, BBC Philharmonic, English National Opera,  Manchester Literature Festival, Manchester City of Literature, the Wagner Society, Manchester Jazz Festival, Howard Jacobson, Margaret Drabble, Blake Morrison, Olivia Laing, Chuck Palahniuk, Jonathan Meades, Hollie McNish and Henry Normal. We have hosted conferences and workshops for the British Council, the Society of Indexers, the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Salford University, Manchester City Council, the Arts Marketing Association and the Performing Arts Network and Development Agency (PANDA), and been a venue for the Manchester Gothic Festival, the Lit and Phil, and the Manchester Science Festival.
