Welcome to the Windrush Warriors: A comedy drama about courage under fire!
The Windrush Warriors is a dramatic comedy. The show will affect people’s emotions whilst making them laugh. The Windrush scandal is exposed and also the trauma that affected so many innocent people. The Pensioners share funny and heart-breaking insight into the experience of Caribbean migrants who helped shape the UK and are now being treated like undesirables. And their answer to this treatment? To fight adversity with warrior like ferocity!
The story exposes the Windrush scandal however the show is life-affirming. After living here all her life, an elderly black woman is having her immigration status investigated. Will she be deported? Her friends rally round & they form a ’fight back group’, The Windrush Warriors.
The Pensioners share funny and heart-breaking insight into the experience of Caribbean migrants who helped shape the UK and are now being treated like undesirables. And their answer to this treatment? To fight adversity with Warrior like ferocity!
Raising awareness about the Windrush scandal via the lens of theatre is a key aspect of the play and the theme of the play is courage under fire. We see how a government betrayed people that a previous government welcomed. Together these 4 pensioners interact with varying degrees of response to this very real threat to their lives and they strike a balance between comedy and sobering drama. These pensioners experience the joys & angst of their golden years and come together when faced with cruel and unjust treatment. The fact that the script is based on true events makes for an interesting, entertaining and socially conscious show.
This is one of five dates at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. There are performances of The Windrush Warriors of June 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th. See tickets for all dates.
